Using donateforacause.org liquidation?

Sep 04, 2012

New member here, sorry if this has been discussed but I couldn't find anything specifically on their liquidation program. Has anyone used it? We have a timeshare in Edisto Island SC, fixed week (35) that was a wedding gift many years ago, but now that we have two kids in school we simply cannot use it any more. From all of the depressing things I have been reading it would seem that there is not a lot of point trying to sell this unit. So I have been talking a good bit with dfc. It seems that the donation angle might be tricky due to possibly over-inflated valuation, and I really don't want to mess with the IRS.

The donation angle really is a sticky, complicated situation.

DFC will charge you about $2500 to "donate" your timeshare. It will likely be more if DFC feels that it will be difficult to quickly turn around and sell.

A cheaper method, if you are willing to do a bit of work, is to give it away and perhaps offer to pay closing costs about ($300) and the following year's maintenance fees. You can advertise here on RedWeek, My Resort Network, E-bay, and/or Timeshare Users Group (TUG).
