Hi everyone. I'm new to this "renting" from an owner process and am a little nervous. Would appreciate any tips/advice about the process? All input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

When renting from an owner make sure there's a contract in place stipulating the terms of the rental then signed by both the owner and you .... you can 'search forums' for a sample rental contract.

Can you rent with odd dates, like July 10 to Jul16, or does it always have to fixed, like check in and out on Saturday?

I have had good experience renting from timeshare owners here. I have been able to negotiate the cost for the entire week or rent only what you need. Everybody won't do that but as a timeshare owner myself, I will sometimes rent one of my units to pay my maintenance fees, so thats what most owners do. Be sure to read the contract carefully and don't pay any upfront fees.

Unless someone owns in a point system then most weeks are fixed or floating and whatever check-in day the contract states .... when we owned fixed weeks the check-in and check-out day couldn't be changed .... most check-in-out days are Fri, Sat or Sun.

That is true, but it has been my experience that some owners like myself, may be willing to reduce the price of the weekly rate to rent the unit. You can check in anytime after the check in date or during the week, but you must check out when specified.

That's certainly true .... a renter can check-in any day within the owners week, but has to check out on check-out day.

Jim: Odd day rentals - I only know Marriott but under the new Destinations points system, an owner could tailor a rental period to your precise timeframe. The problem is that Friday and Saturday nights are very expensive in points in relation to the other days of the week. If I were you, I would try to get a 5 day rental from Sunday night thru Friday morning. This would be less costly. Considering the weekend cost, we have considered staying in a hotel near an attraction for the weekend days and staying at the resort for the Sunday to Friday period.

Unfortunately, Redweek and Interval have not fully adapted to less than 1 week periods for trades and rentals. I suspect that they will eventually follow the trend to enable rentals/uses that can be more flexible. If you look at Redweek rental listings, you will find some 5 day rentals that I suspect were acquired using Marriott Dest. pts. Someone acquired the period and decided they no could no longer use it.

One other thought - I suspect if you knew exactly what you wanted and committed in advance, a Marriott Dest. pts owner could acquire exactly what you want.

Yes, and they can post to find such under RedWishes above.
