Sea Gardens, 2005 Hurricane Damage, Special Assessment in 2009!
I have two units at Sea Gardens in Pompano Beach, FL. Apparently they were damaged from a hurricane in 2005. We already paid around $1000 a few years back for a special assessment. Now, in 2009 we receive another special assessment. The management claims the damages exceeded insurance coverage and mold was discovered in the building. Isn't it the resorts job to have adequate insurance coverage? As I question and contest this special assessment, I have begun receiving calls from Wyndham. The person tells me the $1150 bill is past due, and will go to collections and affect my credit score. This all seems incredibly unfair. We already pay maintenance fees that continue to rise each year. The cost of owning a timeshare is becoming a burden, more and more each year. I have it listed for sale, but we all know the market stinks right now. Has anyone had to deal with this situation?
Thanks...

Yes, the cost of owning a timeshare can be an albatross around one's neck with constantly rising maintenance fees and possible special assessments, and yes, management or the HOA can come after you for not paying those fees .... that's one of the major downfalls of buying any timeshare.
And, in this economy, many timeshare weeks are worthless in the current marketplace.
