transportation and food
Hi,
We will be staying at Harborside in September and I read a few reviews.
Everybody says that transportation is expensive, I was wondering if it would be better to rent a car for the week since we are five people.
Also people say that they are bringing a lot of food and drinks with them. Is there a Wal-Mart near by or a decent grocery?
Thank you
Darquise L.
You can pre-arrange your transport to/from the airport/resort or catch a taxi. Email the concierge for current options and prices. CaribbeanConcierge@starwoodvo.com
In July 09 it was about $32.00 - (Taxi Fee) + $1.00 (Bridge Toll) based on double occupancy - Each additional person pays $4.00 each, per way.
shuttle $30.00 Adults, $15.00 Children, (Roundtrip)
Private van, up to 10 persons, $100 one way
Limos,Sedans, and SUV rides might work your you if you have a larger group as well, ranging in price from $185-350
Again, email the resort and you'll get all of the options and a pre-order form. You can grab a cab at airport and negotiate with the driver. Ask him to factor in a stop at the grocery. Stop on the way in.
Personally I would not rent a car. Traffic is on the "British" side of road, confusing for Americans. Traffic is aggressive on the many roundabouts. Other than the $3 ferry ride to Nassua, we did not leave the resort area much at all.
Food is well-documented that it is very expensive. $7 per slice of pizza. $16 for a Rueben at Murray's .. and those are the "cheap" eateries. Nicer places like MESA will run you $75 PP easily. We packed a soft-side cooler with food. Anything from stovetop stuffing to skillet sensations to frozen lunch meat and chicken breast and ..... anything we could. No issue with customs. You have two burners on stovetop, a micro with convection oven. No real oven.
There is a daily shuttle from Harborside to the local grocery store for $7 PP, round trip.
No WalMarts or otherwise that I saw.
Expect grocery prices to range between 35%-100% higher price per item than you are used to at your local grocery, depending on the item.
Pack few clothes (you have a washer and dryer) and as much food as you can.
