Consolidated Resorts....does this have merit???

Apr 04, 2009

Ok, so I just returned from my week at Club de Soleil. I bought it as a resale last year. My g/f owns at Tahiti down the street. My unit is titled to me, the primary and her the secondary. Hers is just titiled in her name. We went to an owners update and I'm wondering if our liason was blowing smoke up our butts. The owners update was for her unit. They wanted nothing to do with discussing my unit. I forced the issue though. In our discussion, we were told that my g/f needed to get her name off the title of my unit because Goldman Sachs, who now owns Consolidated, would start taking perks and priveledges away (like extra weeks through Interval, priority bookings, etc.) in order to keep their profit level high. My thoughts in comparison was it was like if I bought a Ford truck with free oil changes for life from Dealer A and went and bought another vehicle from Dealer B, that Dealer A would cancel my free oil changes. The other thing was on my resale unit. First he said that Interval was going to stop trading resales within a couple years. He added that when you trade through II, Consolidated gives the worst weeks to II, thus making it harder for you to trade. Was this stuff made up, is it legal, do I ignore, follow the advice, or push the issue? Thanks

First, I want to say that the following is just my opinion based on my experiences.

I was under the impression that any perks were associated with the unit status. The fact that your GF is on the deed with YOUR unit, should not have any bearing on what perks she gets with HER unit. Remember though, that all perks are above and beyond the use of your deeded week at the home resort and are controlled by the resort. Unless your contract states otherwise, perks such as extra weeks provided by the resort; internal trading; etc; can be modified.

II doesn't care whether the unit deposited for exchange is a resale or not. Remember II only makes money on units which are deposited. The resort may be dropping it's affiliation with II and therefore resale units might not be able to use II as the exchange company. This is what is happening at my resort. They switched from II to RCI. Current owners can continue to use II, but future owners have to use RCI.

That could be true if you have to go through Consolidated to coordinate II exchanges. The resort would probably take your PRIME week and rent it while depositing a crappy week to II. Are you able to book your week and deposit directly with II?

Is it made up? It could be, salespeople will say anything to get you to buy something from them.

Is it legal? What is in your contract?. My guess is that your contract gives you the right to your deeded week at your home resort. Anything else probably has a disclaimer stating the "perks" could be modified by the resort. While It's certainly unethical to lie (politicians do it all the time), but unless it contradicts something in a written contract, it probably wouldn't get far in a court of law.

Do you ignore it? I would first see what your original documents say and go from there. IMO ownership changes can affect certain "perks". If you take your GF off your deed, or if your GF added you to her deed, the resort might consider that an ownership change (i.e. resale) and you or her might lose those perks.
