I am interested in buying a time share and have been offered one at a Spinnaker resort on Hilton Head. They are offering a floating week, which I have been told is usable at any time of the year, at any of their resorts. In addition, they have stated that I will be able to exchange the Interval packages without any issues. I have a couple questions:

1. A floating week would seem like an advantage, what are the drawbacks? 2. Is Hilton Head, SC really considered a “premium” destination in the U.S.? 3. Are there issues I can expect to deal with when it comes to exchanging my week with Interval? 4. Is there anything specific to Spinnaker I should be concerned about? Thanks.

NEVER buy from a developer. You can get great deals buying from an owner looking to sell. Use this site, ebay or others. A deeded week is better than points. A floating week means you can choose your week from available weeks in a particular selection depending on which level you choose but you do not have an assigned unit.

A fixed week is assigned a unit and week. You can use that every year without worrying about availabilty. It will always be available that week unless you decide otherwise.

Along with timeshare ownership comes the obligation of having to pay ever increasing maintenance fees and assessments. You may want to rent one first before buying to see if it's really for you. You may also decide to just rent and avoid the lifetime obligation of MF and assessments.

I'm sure others will post and give you their assessment of timeshare ownership. Good luck and make sure you understand what you are obligating yourself to before you sign on the dotted line.

As Don said, don't buy from a developer ..... you can buy a resale for pennies on the dollar of what a developer charges. Concerning floating weeks, when you own a floating week you must make your reservation well in advance of your vacation .... if you wait until the last minute there may not be anything available.

Yes, Hilton Head is a premium vacation destination.

Exchanging is a crap shoot .... you would have to deposit your week then choose an exchange as early as possible.

I don't really know the Spinnaker product personally, but from what I've read it's a good product, HOWEVER, don't buy from a developer .... look for a resale.
