As we make our way through winter, we’re looking for vacation inspiration in the tropics. While the CDC has recently issued travel alerts for some of these destinations, they’ll still be ready to welcome you back once you’re comfortable with traveling again.
Scenic & Secluded: Kauai, Hawaii
Many of us instantly think of Hawaii when the idea of a tropical vacation comes up — and you’ve got plenty of options when it comes to Hawaiian islands, from the Maui to Oahu. But if you’re looking for something a little more secluded, try Kauai. Nicknamed “The Garden Island,” Kauai is renowned for its pristine natural beauty; the lush scenery here is often almost too beautiful to be believed. The beaches are legendary, too, of course. Find a sandy spot on the crescent shaped Poipu Beach Park and keep an eye out for and majestic humpback whales, usually in the area December through April.
Tropical Adventure: Kokee State Park boasts 45 miles of hiking trails, letting you get way off the beaten path on your tropical escape. It’s a flora and fauna wonderland. During your trek, you’ll see dazzling wildflowers and an array of Hawaiian forest birds.
Where To Stay: We mentioned Poipu Beach above. Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club puts you just steps from the sand.
Coastal Delights & Beachside Nightlife: Playa Jacó, Costa Rica
Just a short drive from the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), Playa Jacó is Costa Rica’s most popular tropical beachside destination. And once you’re there, it’s easy to see why. The beach is lively and lovely — and despite its popularity, there’s plenty of space to spread out. Moments away from the sand, Playa Jacó also is home to a thriving nightlife scene if that’s what you’re after. Restaurants, dance clubs and cocktail lounges are around every corner.
Tropical Adventure: The nearby Carara National Park is an outdoor adventure playground. Across this teeming nature reserve, you’ll encounter rare species (like the endangered scarlet macaw) and have the chance to go ziplining, horseback riding, and much more.
Where To Stay: Marriott Vacation Club at Los Sueños is a tropical dream come true, set amidst a verdant forest and featuring easy access to an 18-hole championship golf course.
Crystal Clear Waters & Island Luxury: The Bahamas
With 16 islands and 100,000 square miles of astonishingly clear ocean, the Bahamas is a favorite Caribbean getaway for travelers who have had enough of snow and cold. A day in the Bahamas can go from snorkeling amidst colorful tropical fish at Cabbage Beach to a shopping spree in the vibrant capital city of Nassau, from indulgent spa treatments to gourmet Japanese cuisine at Nobu Restaurant.
Tropical Adventure: If you’re up for an extraordinary scuba adventure, try Dean’s Blue Hole on Long Island. This is one of the deepest underwater caverns in the world and divers flock there to experience its calm, clear waters, and astonishing marine life.
Where To Stay: Just steps from the sandy shores of Cabbage Beach, the luxurious Paradise Island Beach Club gives you front row seats to some of the Caribbean’s most spectacular sunsets.
Baja BFF Escape: Cabo San Lucas
If you’ve been thinking about a vacation with old friends, consider Cabo San Lucas. Located on the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja peninsula, it’s well-known for its thrilling nightlife scene. But you can also get away from it all easily, whether you’re exploring a hidden gem beach or taking an off-road desert expedition.
Tropical Adventure: One of Baja’s signature sights is the stunning Arch at Land’s End, a majestic rock formation. To enhance your experience, rent a kayak and take to the water for a closer look at this one-of-a-kind natural attraction.
Where To Stay:Grand Solmar Land’s End Resort is the ideal Cabo San Lucas resort, with downtown nightlife, shopping, and dining moments away at all times.
